D.B. Cooper
Just a little crosspost here about my other project: Fancy Mammal. You probably already know this, but I work with Brent Wear to make these pieces where he paints and I draw in ink to make some of our unique ideas come to life. I love how this piece came out and wanted to share it with you. Now you know I have a secret other art life in addition to sewing all the things and illustrating all the things. Who knew that we’d be releasing a piece about D.B. Cooper right around the anniversary of the hijacking. The crows know what’s up. Brent and I wrote about this piece…

Inktober 2021: Second Half
I didn’t end up doing as many prompts as I would have liked to. As time went on, I had ideas that I wasn’t quite able to figure out in my head yet. For example Day 21: OMEN. I sketched out the general image in pencil, but couldn’t quite figure out how to make it work. I didn’t have the image in my head at all; just the idea (more on that later). I set it aside. It was a piece i was going to draw, but it had to wait until I was ready to ink it in or I’m just wasting paper. There were several prompts I still…

Everything Will Be Okay – My First Zine
I have been wanting to make a zine FOREVER. In light of the last year, two years, how long has this been going on? The election, the personal lives of so many people I know, how many friends died of cancer. Just a lot. I suppose this is all part of getting older. Is it? Anyway things in the world are tumultuous, and I want to counter it in any tiny way I can. So this little project of mine: it is small and fits in your pocket. Not a fancy edition to collect and save in mylar, but something that you can carry in your pocket to pull out…

Same Old Same Old
These are interesting times. I don’t really like to discuss my personal life online AT ALL. Here will be no exception. Need to know basis. I’m secretive to a fault. Except for some things. I’ve been sharing my creative process with you for years. No trade secrets jealously guarded, because why bother? The internet allows you to look up just about anything; no mysteries there. I always like to show my work, because one thing that drives me absolutely crazy is when people say: “Oh, you’re so talented.” Like the hours upon hours I spend honing my craft of perfect stitches, and tiny lines, shaving off bits of curves to…

Holiday 2015 – Part One Owl pieces for Sale
If you have been following me on Instagram you will know that Brent Wear and I have been working hard on finishing a crap ton of smaller pieces in an affordable range to hang up at Johnny Sole 815 SW Alder in downtown Portland for the holidays. The show will be up until at least January with pieces rotating in and out as they sell and we make more things. In the interest of being equitable to out of town fans and me not completely losing my mind, I am not listing any of the originals in my shop. Instead I am going to post photos here and on Instagram, and if…

Drawing and Painting: Bird Collaborations with Brent Wear
Not too long ago my friend, painter Brent Wear approached me about doing some collaborations with my bird drawings. He has been encouraging me forever to do more visual artwork, and has been my go to art mentor whenever I am in some sort of existential art crisis. I have resisted making purely visual art for a long time in order to keep myself on a steady track of sewing, but it has always been difficult for me to focus on one thing single-mindedly. Usually, I am satisfied to make a stray thing here and there to feed my curious soul’s need to try new things. Brent is well known…

Calendar Project: Drawing A Bird A Day 6 Months In
Starting from the beginning of this year, I gave myself a challenge to improve my drawing skills by drawing something on every single date page of my calendar. To keep myself in check, I posted each drawing to Instagram. The reasoning behind this is that I want to do elaborate embroideries on corsets, and in order to be able to stitch the images I want to, I have to be able to draw. Now I could do this through trial and error on corsets, but it would be slow and expensive. My aim here is to develop a skill and a style in as short amount of time as possible.…

secrets show
being that i am the queen of the eleventh hour, i did everything i possibly could to put off working on this piece. mostly because i didn’t have a fully formed idea of it in my head. when it came down to the wire, i set about looking for already drawn birds to save a bit of time, and i came across an envelope full of papers from my previous residence; my grandfather’s condo. i moved in during the fall of 2003 just after my great-grandmother died at 100, one of my best friends and i parted ways, and my grandfather was moved to hospice care with terminal cancer. i…
