Holiday 2015 – Part One Owl pieces for Sale

If you have been following me on Instagram you will know that Brent Wear and I have been working hard on finishing a crap ton of smaller pieces in an affordable range to hang up at Johnny Sole 815 SW Alder in downtown Portland for the holidays. The show will be up until at least January with pieces rotating in and out as they sell and we make more things. In the interest of being equitable to out of town fans and me not completely losing my mind, I am not listing any of the originals in my shop. Instead I am going to post photos here and on Instagram, and if…

    Postcards

As Brent Wear and I are getting ready for our big holiday show (more on that soon), I couldn’t resist having some postcards made out of some of the collection of small pieces we are making. There is a corvid set and a burrowing owl set available while supplies last.

Collaborations 14 and 15 and a Some Crows

So my friend Brent Wear and I have been working away on new pieces, and I am excited that some are finally finished. These most recent pieces have taken a bit of a turn of the surreal, but that is just our personalities bleeding into our work. As you may have guessed, we both have odd senses of humour. Someday I will have to post some of our really bad sketches that we draw to make each other laugh. We are both pretty pleased with how these last two works have come out. So pleased in fact that the Swallow with a House on its Back has become our business…

    Up in the Air

January. There is something discomforting about the up-in-the-air-ness of January. I could say that this January is different due to decisions I made official in December, but that would be a lie. The fact of the matter is that January is a lot of pressure. We are expected to make promises to ourselves and the rest of the world about the year. Diet and exercise, creative projects, maps, lists. Dreams, pipe dreams, peer pressure and unrealistic expectations. All the swirling things that this arbitrary new beginning brings. I’m not much for new year’s resolutions. I don’t even count January first as my new year. But it involves a brand new…

    Hiatus

Hiatus, sabbatical, something; I need a break. I packed up my sewing machine, and put the boxes of half-finished corsets and garter belts in storage. I carefully labeled my in progress designs, and put them in envelopes with their notes, so I can tell where I ended my design process, and put them in the master pattern box. All the flowers and finished pieces are labelled and ready for Crafty Wonderland. Whatever is left afterwards will be boxed up and put into storage. I haven’t posted here much, because I haven’t had anything new I felt excited about. This has been true for quite some time now, but I kept…

Spring Dress with Hearts Around the Hem

I exiled my sewing machine to the closet in mid-December intending to just take the holidays and January off from sewing. Before I knew it March was here, and my sewing machine was still put away. Of course what was meant to fill me with relief fills me with anxiety. Since moving my studio into my house, I have to live with the piles of unfinished things that seem to mock me: the plaid skirt cut out on the chair, the stack of garter belts I never finished before the holiday sales, the stack of corsets in various stages of not done. The story of my life. What inspired me…

    Some Owls

I find my oracles in fiction; which is funny, because I am not a very avid reader. Someday I might post a reading list, but I am not sure it would be relevant to anyone but me. If you pay attention, I share what I’ve learned in the cryptic half sentences of twitter and instagram. Sometimes it comes out in drawing or dress form. Even I don’t know how it will end up. Here, I drew you some owls.
